Diabetes and bedwetting – what’s the link?

In this post, Alina Lynden, Helpline Advisor at ERIC UK, The Children’s Bowel & Bladder Charity, shares her daughter Nella’s experience of sudden onset bedwetting after a period of dryness at the age of 4. She explains how, for a small number of children each year, this type of bedwetting (also known as secondary nocturnal enuresis) and needing the toilet more frequently can be signs that they have developed Type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune condition). Families should visit their GP so they can rule out diabetes and get help with bedwetting treatment from 5 years old.
